Billy Nelson of Taft advanced to Saturday's final of the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase by winning his heat with a time of 8:42.05. It was the eighth-fastest time in the first round overall.

After leading the first two laps of the 3,000-meter steeplechase, Taft's Billy Nelson dropped off the pace and finished 13th in a time of 8:52.49.
Josh McAdams won the race in 8:29.91.
